Southampton Solent University, Southampton

A £21.5m design and build contract for a new seven storey teaching building with an internal floor space of 9,250 square metres connected to one of the University’s existing buildings.

The new building, features an 18m x 80m main atrium, within which a pod-like structure – housing an 80 seat lecture theatre – which is suspended, with a number of bridges linking the pod to the new and existing building. The design of the pod is intended to reflect Southampton’s nautical heritage and the University’s forward-looking ethos. Beneath the pod, a lower atrium leads to subterranean lecture theatres as well as lower level classrooms, kitchens, offices and a plant room.

The new building also features a main conference centre, a number of smaller conference rooms and numerous classrooms (part of a total 2,000 square metres of classroom area).

THE CHALLENGE

The client had very specific requirements relating to the ironmongery, but their requirements unfortunately exceeded the budget that had been allowed. This included the starting of a new high security Master Key System for all the mechanical locks which could be ultimately extended throughout the whole campus as and when in the future. The ironmongery also needed to be compatible with the new Electronic Access Control System they wanted to use, and door closers had to have a non-projecting arm – all of which are more expensive than standard types.

THE SOLUTION

Having experienced on numerous occasions the benefits and flexibility of working with SWS, the main contractor made contact with us to see if we could help them solve the challenge. We were only too pleased to step in and help out. Firstly we drew up a definitive Ironmongery Schedule which took care of the compatibility issues with the required Electronic Access Control system. We were then able to present fit for purpose products that were with much more cost effective than others. This was particularly so with regards to the door closer solution – we able to provide a High Efficiency Cam Action Closer with a non-projecting arm which met the requirements of BS8300.

We later took care of the clients special lock suiting requirements, by meeting with them directly to discuss their needs and what they wanted to achieve in the future. We are only too pleased to have been able to provide the contractor and client with a satisfactory Ironmongery solution, not only for now, but something they can build on in the future.
